Jury Service
Just been summoned to do this for the first time in my life.
Am 50+ and was hoping I'd swerve it.

Any of the fine people of WHO done it and can give me any tips, either on how to get out of it or how to survive it ?
Any amusing stories to tell about doing it ?

Like West Ham recently, the defence rests.

Re: Jury Service
I've done it twice. it can be interesting but you'll realise very quickly that many on a jury don't follow the evidence presented by the prosecution and defence lawyers and instead introduce pre-conceived biases or interpret facts to suit their stance on things, especially if it's a drugs case. both my cases we couldn't come to a unanimous decision and only found out after we'd finished that both cases were re-trials

Re: Jury Service
Was called up when I was 18 at snaresbrook spent 2 MONTHS on one case( last two nights in a Hotel) as had x6 guys on 10 charges each so we had 60 ''verdicts'' to agree on !!
Made easier that if they were guilty on charge 1 meant they were guilty on others absolute nightmare all in the dock had criminal records longer than a double album LP.

Did not sleep for months after absolute nightmare !!!

Re: Jury Service
Just Googled dress code for jury service and read that most things ok but probably not shorts and no T shirts with offensive slogans on.

Interestingly a few people suggested that wearing a suit could well sway a defence lawyer to reject picking you.

Re: Jury Service
Its your civic duty. I fucking loved it. Pointed to the other jurors how fucking thick they were and we managed to convict the cunt. Again had a history of ne'er-do-wellness.
Everyone dhould fo this.

Re: Jury Service
Done mine earlier in the year. Got called to the first case but wasn't selected by the clerk of the court from the names on the cards. On the Thursday of the 1st week got called again and selected for a case in the afternoon. Went in on the Friday and we were sent home at 11am until Monday. Case resumed on Monday and by Wednesday morning he was found guilty. Sat around for a couple of hors and then sent home. Got a call at 5 that day saying that was it and wasn't needed for the rest of the week.

Like you got called to this in my mid 50s. Had to serve all week. Did two assualt cases. Both not guilty.

One case witnesses and police evidence all over the place. Later found out that the guy we found not guilty was a real villian - in restrospect recon the witnesses were nobbled if not the police.

Re: Jury Service
Jury selection was a joke on mine as was obvious that the 6 defendant Lawyers did not want anyone of an ethnic / coloured ''look'' I went as if dressed for work thinking it would be only a couple of days see below where that got me !!

Re: Jury Service
I've done it 3 times now, the most recent last year. Had to stand up and deliver the verdict on a rape case. Some fairly harrowing evidence and deliberation lasted 3 days. The guy got 8 years.

Can you imagine having to do this in the days of capital punishment.

I could never sanction anyone being killed, maybe that's why they got rid?

Re: Jury Service
My one got 13, and I had to be the foreman as well cos all the others were cacking themselves, although to be fair I did have a trot to my car when I left.

Re: Jury Service
My mum got a gang rape case at Snaresbrook.

All black chaps and every single juror got a death threat from various places ie probably a load of blokes part of the rape who weren't caught and so it was a police ride back home for all of them every night.

She found it boring as fuck, but was happy they were all found guilty as she's a daft old racist.

She was in her 60's then.

Re: Jury Service
Reason for the ''all white'' jury on mine was the defendant's had kicked shit out of an Asian guy on one thier robberies.

Re: Jury Service
When you consider how difficult it must be to find enough evidence to proceed with a case, all jurors should as public spirited citizens find every defendant guilty. They would not be in court if there was any doubt. My sympathies are for victims and not criminals.

Re: Jury Service
just seen this

i know you get paid a pittance for this but ( just in case you have a Credit card or 2 and /or any insurance policies they some times have little clauses in them which pay 30 quid a day if you are called up for jury service

Just saying like might be worth a check to earn a few extra quid !

Re: Jury Service
I considered trying to serve it when called up earlier tHis year.

I thought I'd be sitting on my arse watching the clock with arm loads of books. In fact, it was a most enjoyable and very enlightening experience. The real plus, was the opportunity to mix with people I normally wouldn't in general simply because my social circle tends to be my peers.

Embrace the opportunity to uphold a great democratic process and you'll enjoy it. IMO

Re: Jury Service
Did it and loved it. Had a nasty case of assault in Greenwich. He went down and found out he'd been abused as a kid and foster homes.

I didn't hear it but some woman on the jury said as he went away that all the jury were "getting fucking done"

Still waiting.

One of the reasons they got rid, was blatantly executing innocent people

Google Timothy Evans for one of the reasons
